Is Teflon Waterproof? Is Teflon Toxic? Exploring PFAS-free Teflon Jackets

When it comes to waterproofing and durability, Teflon is undoubtedly a term that often pops up in various discussions. Widely used in clothing, cookware, and other daily items, Teflon is renowned for its excellent water and stain resistance. But the questions that follow are: Is Teflon really waterproof? Does it pose any potential health risks? And if these are concerns, can we opt for PFAS-free Teflon jackets?

Teflon, in itself, is a synthetic polymer that exhibits good waterproofing properties. When applied to clothing, the Teflon coating effectively repels water, causing droplets to bead up and roll off quickly, keeping the interior dry. This is a huge boon for outdoor enthusiasts who often face inclement weather.

Concerns about Teflon’s toxicity mainly stem from certain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that may have been used in its production process. These compounds were previously key ingredients in waterproof and stain-resistant coatings but were later found to potentially harm human health and the environment. However, this doesn’t mean that all Teflon products are harmful. In fact, with technological advancements and increasing consumer awareness about safety, more and more brands are adopting PFAS-free Teflon production methods.

Gore-Tex, for instance, announced in 2014 that they had completely eliminated PFOA from their raw materials and declared their new membranes to be PFAS-free. However, GORE-TEX® items typically feature a secondary waterproof treatment, a durable water repellent (DWR) surface coating made from PFAS. The first products using this new PFAS-free membrane were released in 2023.

This means that in the outdoor clothing market, especially the high-end segment, PFAS-free Teflon jackets have become a new trend. By adopting innovative coating technologies and materials, these jackets not only retain Teflon’s original waterproof and stain-resistant properties but also significantly reduce potential health and environmental risks. For consumers who prioritize both functionality and sustainability with safety, this is an ideal choice.

Currently, Fir’s clothing line utilizes the new PFAS-free membrane technology, offering greater competitiveness in the cost-effective market segment.
